Ali Hassan (b. 1956, Doha) is one of Qatar’s most celebrated artists, known for his vibrant semi-abstract compositions rooted in Arabic calligraphy. Trained as a calligrapher in the 1970s, he later studied in Belgium and Cairo, developing a unique visual language that explores the aesthetic and spiritual dimensions of Arabic letters—particularly the letter nun. Over his decades-long career, Hassan has worked across media including painting, sculpture, and installation.
His work has been exhibited internationally—from Tokyo to Paris—and is held in major museum collections worldwide. A recipient of the State Encouragement Award (2005), he currently serves as an expert in fine arts for Qatar’s Ministry of Justice.
